The Chinese Shar-Pei Was Once the Rarest Dog on Earth
Chinese Shar-Pei were declared the rarest dog in the world in the late 1970s. If you've poked around a bit here you may have seen I was fortunate enough to share my life with a few Chinese Shar-Pei in the early to mid-1990s. So, I still have a soft spot for the loyal, intelligent dogs.
There was one man in Hong Kong, Matgo Law, who single-handedly saved the Chinese Shar-Pei from extinction. He tirelessly contacted journalists, dog fanciers and anyone he thought could help save the dogs. His concerns were well-founded as China was taking control of Hong Kong and with their rule would come crushing taxes on dogs. Life Magazine wrote an article on the breed and featured a Shar-Pei on the cover in 1979.
THE 1983 Neiman-Marcus Catalog
Then in 1983 Neiman-Marcus featured Chinese Shar-Pei puppies in their annual Christmas catalog and it was insanity! Side Note: I was living in Dallas at that time and working in the fashion industry and that is ALL anyone was talking about. To this day, many people refer to Chinese Shar-Pei as the "Neiman's Dog."
Puppies were sold for $2000, which would be almost $6,000 in our 2022 dollars. Neimans supposedly had to hire two phone operators just to take the Shar-Pei puppy orders! Of course, there were strongly held opinions on both sides. The Chinese Shar-Pei Club of America was not pleased, as that type of puppy sales is directly against their by-laws/rules.
The good that came of it was a dog breed that was on the brink of being lost was saved to flourish. Today, the Chinese Shar-Pei has safe numbers to be able to breed happier, healthier wrinkled dogs for years to come.
