The name XOLOITZCUINTLI, comes from the Aztec word for DOG - ITZCUINTLI and the Aztec God XOLOTL's name in native NAHUATI.

HISTORY OF THE XOLOITZCUINTLI

There is no DNA evidence connecting the Xolo to the Chinese Crested or any of the other hairless breeds of dog. It is conjectured the Xolo may have results from a hairless genetic mutation that was then bred to set the hairlessness.

The Aztecs, Toltecs, and Mayan people considered the Xolo a sacred dog. Aztec mythology tells how the god Xoloti created the Xoloitzcuintli using a bit of the Bone of Life from which all mankind was made. Xolotl gifted Man with the Xolo with strength instructions to guard the dogs with their lives. He also told them the Xolo would then guide them through the underworld of death, Mictian, to Heaven in the Evening Star.
