Bulldog Factoids
As gruesome as it sounds to us, bull-baiting was a popular pastime in England from 1206 until it was banned in 1835. Since Bulldogs were bred specifically to bait bulls, it seemed as if the Bulldog would soon be extinct.
Loyal fanciers began breeding for less ferocious personalities and gentler temperaments. Many were exported to the United States, Germany and the smaller ones that went to France with lacemakers became today's French Bulldogs. Soon the more laid-back Bulldogs found their spot as companions and family friends.
