Does Your Great Pyrenees Have a Rough, Dry Chapped Nose?
Dignity Wrapped in White
The Great Pyrenees, or Pyr as their fans call them, is one of the ancient breeds. For thousands of years they have guarded livestock the world over with quiet dignity and grace. As times have changed the Pyr has also become a beloved companion and family dog.
Our Great Pyrenees, Zoe, was one of the most wonderful dogs we have ever been lucky enough to have in our lives. She passed at 13 in spring of 2017 and while I'm grateful for her long life, I will miss her forever.
Always on the Job
The Great Pyrenees has thousands years of hardwiring imprinted onto their DNA telling them to oversee their charges and protect them. Your Pyr may not do any more than keep chipmunks out of the yard, but the building-in protectiveness is still there. In your Pyrenees' world keeping that chipmunk out of the yard is as important as an ancient Pyr keeping wolves at bay. That is what a Pyr was born to do.
Great Pyrenees Dry Noses
Like many of the giant breeds, the Great Pyrenees can develop a dry, cracked nose or ridge of crust across the top of the nose. A dry nose is not only unattractive, it can inhibit your Pyr's ability to sniff out the necessary info. This can cause your Pyr to feel anxious, on edge and worried about their ability to guard. Like we feel with No Service on our cellphone when we REALLY need directions.
The dryness on your Pyr's nose may range from a bit of a dry nose to patches of crustiness on to an extremely dry nose in which the nose has overgrown tissue covering it, called Nasal Hyperkeratosis (more info on that below). The good news is Nose Butter® treats all levels of dog nose dryness.
