KEEP YOUR COLLIE'S NOSE IN TIP TOP CONDITION WITH COLLIE NOSE BUTTER®
Collies are beautiful dogs by any standard. Their faces are refined elegance and that glorious coat makes you want to bury your face in it! And of course, many of us have such fond memories of Lassie being that best friend we all dreamed of.
Unfortunately, many of these lovely dogs suffer from a condition commonly called Collie Nose. NOSE BUTTER®, while not touted as a cure, when used as directed, will help alleviate Collie Nose symptoms.
There is a condition, Nasal Hyperkeratosis, in which the nose is overgrown with excess nose skin tissue (a protein overgrowth). If your Collie's nose is really crusty or has a pocked or barnacle appearance it may be Nasal Hyperkeratosis. The good news is any level of dry nose issue can be easily treated and a healthy balance maintained with routine NOSE BUTTER® usage.
YOUR COLLIE'S SENSE OF SMELL IS HIS SUPERPOWER
Your Collie's sense of smell is his SUPERPOWER, well, next to being able to look fabulous while saving Timmie from falling down the well or being caught on railroad tracks. I know I dated myself with those Lassie references! Your Collie was actually bred for guarding flocks and herding them nicely from Point A to Point B. That glorious coat protected them from the harsh elements and the brush and bramble of the highlands of Scotland.
While your Collie may never herd anything more than the kids in the yard, the instinct to be aware of everything that is going on in their environment is ingrained into their DNA from centuries of breeding. Their heightened sense of smell let them know when predators or strange people were approaching. Your Collie’s genetics demands they stay on top of their current environment, even if that is the house and yard.
WHY HAVING A HEALTHY NOSE IS IMPORTANT TO YOUR COLLIE - MENTALLY, PHYSICALLY & EMOTIONALLY
Not knowing what is going on can lead to your dog becoming less confident and even hesitant. A rough, dry, irritated nose does not act in its full capacity as a scent gathering info system for your Collie. A moist healthy dog nose captures the scent particles that float by, allowing your dog to be in the know. NOSE BUTTER® helps dogs stay informed and more confident of their surrounding.
COLLIE NOSE INFO
There are two types of lupus (immune system attacks itself) in dogs: systemic and discoid. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is rare in dogs (thank goodness). SLE attacks various tissues in the body; kidneys, skin, heart, lungs, nervous system, blood and/or joints. This is usually fatal.
Collie Nose or Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE) is a type of SLE, but is localized and doesn't spread through the entire system. DLE is skin specific and the sores are confined to the face and nose. Collie's have a genetic predisposition towards developing DLE. A biopsy is required to 100% diagnose DLE.
First Collies lose the pigment around their nose and the nose texture gets abnormally smooth. Their nose loses all the texture and feels slick.Next, crust and open sores or ulcerated areas form. The nose, lips, ears, the skin around the eyes and occasionally the genitals are affected. (see image)
Exposure to the sun aggravates this condition and they must have sun protection. There are precious few organic sunscreen ingredients available that really help shield from the sun’s rays. Zinc oxide is the most well known, but ingestion can cause zinc toxicity in dogs. So, the sun protection options with no zinc that are natural are very limited.

NASAL HYPERKERATOSIS INFO
NASAL HYPERKERATOSIS AKA CRUSTY CRUD, BARNACLE NOSE
Is your dog’s nose EXTREMELY dry? Does it look like barnacles are growing on it? Are there layers or chunks of crust that crack and bleed? If your dog’s nose could be described as extremely dry, or looks like the BEFORE noses in the image above, it may be Nasal Hyperkeratosis. Rest assured, it is not caused by diet, genetics, playing in the dirt or anything you can control.
Nasodigital or Nasal Hyperkeratosis is an idiopathic condition, which means unknown cause ¯\(°_o)/¯ that is marked by the excessive formulation of nose crust that vets call keratin, (vet-speak for protein). It actually IS layers of skin tissue that has grown wild over on the nose. This condition isn't life-threatening and most veterinarians consider Nasal Hyperkeratosis cosmetic. But there are medical, cosmetic and mental health reasons that this dry nose condition can affect your dog's well being. It has to be uncomfortable for your dog. Your dog cannot breathe as easily. It’s unattractive, of course.
Most importantly, your dog is not getting the scents and smells they ned to feel secure and confident. A healthy moist nose snags good smells that float by and provide your dog with info. A dry nose is not going to capture the info packed smells. This can lead to frustration and a lack of self confidence. Your dog knows info is out there, but he cannot get it.
