Chinese Shar-Pei Nose Butter® All Natural Moisturizer For Your Shar-Pei's Rough, Dry Nose
Let's start with a super-quick Chinese Shar-Pei history lesson. In the late 1970s/early 1980s the Shar-Pei was the rarest dog on earth and was thiiiis close to extinction. Thanks to a passionate band of breeders and breed supporters the Chinese Shar-Pei was saved from disappearing forever.
Of course, this means the genetic pool wasn't even a pond…it was a puddle. Which led to a variety of issues that the dedicated Chinese Shar-Pei community is still working to eliminate or improve.
Chinese Shar-Pei lovers know all about the immune system issues this breed suffers from. A chronic dry nose may be a symptom of this slightly depressed immune system, but that does not mean it cannot be helped! If the nose has a more marked level of dryness or layers of crust your Chinese Shar-Pei may have Nasal Hyperkeratosis aka crusty nose crud (that is my technical term for it). More on that condition in Tabs below and HERE. The good news is any level of dry nose issue can be easily treated and a healthy balance maintained with routine NOSE BUTTER® usage.
Why A Healthy Nose Is A Big Deal For Your SHAR-PEI
A healthy dog nose has a moist surface which acts like sticky smell gathering flypaper for dogs. Scent particles, packed full of fun info for your Shar-Pei, float through the air. If their nose is dried out, those juicy smells won't stick. Then your Shar-Pei licks that dried out nose (and licks it and licks it) in an attempt to regain moisture.
Chinese Shar-Pei Nose Butter moisturizes their nose leather, getting it back into info-gathering shape FAST. Not only does your Shar-Pei look better, he is also able to breathe more easily and he will be more confident and secure. Now his nose is working properly and he is able to snag all the info-packed smells that float his way. Happy, healthy Chinese Shar-Pei!
The Chinese Shar-Pei, an ancient and unique breed, is thought to have originated in the area around the small village of Tai Li in Kwangtung Province, and has existed for centuries in the southern provinces of China, apparently since the Han Dynasty (c. 200 B.C.).
Statues bearing a strong resemblance to the Shar-Pei have been discovered and dated to this period. More recently, a Chinese manuscript of the 13th century has been translated; it refers to a wrinkled dog with characteristics much like those of the Shar-Pei. –From the CSPCA

The name Shar-Pei means sand-skin but a truer translation would be rough, sandy coat or sand-paper-like coat. There are two main coat types in the breed, the horse-coat (rough, short) and the brush-coat (longer, but still coarse). There is a bear-coat variety which, like the black tongue, hints at the Shar-Pei’s relation to the Chow.
Of course, after you use NOSE BUTTER® on your Chinese Shar-Pei dry nose, you can use it on your itchy skin ;-D
A thousand years ago aka the late 1980s, I shared my life with a few lovely Shar-Pei. I will always treasure the friends I made from that association and the crazy adventures I had. Yep, that is me in the 1980’s with Krinkle Dog. I was working those 80s leg warmers in the Dallas summer. Krinkle Dog was a patient and loving dog and I still remember his sweet nature and big heart.

NASAL HYPERKERATPSIS YOUR DOG'S EXTREMELY DRY NOSE
NASAL HYPERKERATOSIS AKA CRUSTY CRUD, BARNACLE NOSE
Is your dog’s nose EXTREMELY dry? Does it look like barnacles are growing on it? Are there layers or chunks of crust that crack and bleed? If your dog’s nose looks like the BEFORE noses in the image above, it may be Nasal Hyperkeratosis. Rest assured, it is not caused by diet, genetics, playing in the dirt or anything you can control. And the good news is Nose Butter® works on it!
Nasodigital or Nasal Hyperkeratosis is an idiopathic condition, which means unknown cause ¯\(°_o)/¯ that causes excessive formulation of dry crust that vets call keratin, (vet-speak for protein). It actually IS layers of skin tissue that has grown wild over on the nose.
This condition isn't life-threatening and most veterinarians consider Nasal Hyperkeratosis cosmetic. But there are medical, cosmetic and mental health reasons that this dry nose condition can affect your dog's well being. It has to be uncomfortable for your dog. Your dog cannot breathe as easily. It’s unattractive, of course.
Most importantly, your dog is not getting the scents and smells they need to feel secure and confident. A healthy nose snags good smells that float by and provides your dog with info. A dry nose is not going to capture the info packed smells. This can lead to frustration and a lack of self confidence.
You know you feel when have NO SERVICE as you drive in an unfamiliar area? Probably frustrated, anxious and maybe terrified. Your dog experiences those same emotions when they can't get the info they need to make good dog decisions.
