Does Your Weimaraner Have a Dry or Even Crusty Nose?
The Grey Ghost of Germany
The Weimaraner is often called the Grey Ghost, for obvious reasons. The short, smooth coat is found in 50 shades of grey (I couldn't help myself) from a pale mouse to dark silver gray. Not only are they lovely dogs esthetically, they are also one of the best hunting dogs. Did you know Weimaraners were used by royalty for hunting large game such as; boar, bear and deer?
In addition to their unique coloration that allows them to move virtually unseen through the morning mists, Weimaraner have a sharp sense of smell. All those centuries of breeding for sniffing out game (from birds to bears) has given them a powerful legacy of sniffing mojo.
Your Dog’s Dry Nose
Weimaraners, like many sporting dogs, often have dry nose issues. The problems can range from a slightly dry nose to a chronic condition, nasal hyperkeratosis, in which layers of crusty, scab-like skin cover the nose.
The Weimaraner has the genetics of centuries of DNA tlling them to sniff and trail and find the prey. But, if their nose is dry, info-packed smell particles won’t adhere to it and your dog won't get needed data. Your Weim can feel a bit off from not having the info they need to make good dog decisions. They'll feel like we do when we have NO SERVICE and REALLY need directions…frustrated, annoyed and rattled. All because of a dry nose.
