The Mollosus
The Molossus was an ancient war dog, yep, actual gladiator dog. Ancient Romans used them to fight in the arenas, Caesar brought them back from England after he invaded in 55 BC and they fought in the arenas.
Alexander the Great and Aristotle also spoke of the colossal war dogs. It is thought the Molossus was the ancestor of all mastiff types and giant herding dogs, but recently that theory has been disputed. Time and DNA will tell.
After such a history of fierce, battling war dogs, the Mastiff breeders of more recent eras worked diligently to instill a more even temperament in their guardians of castles and estates. We owe them a debt of gratitude for having the foresight to breed for loving, yet protective, family-friendly Mastiffs.
