BUT FIRST…A German Shepherd History Tidbit
DID YOU KNOW? One man was instrumental in starting, defining and refining the German Shepherd. In 1889, German dog breeder Max von Stephanitz was struck by a wolf-ish dog at a local German dog show. He was so impressed by the dog's looks, intelligence, and work ethic that he bought the dog on the spot.
To further standardize the breed Von Stephanitz started the German Shepherd Dog Club and wrote an initial breed standard. His motto for the breed was UTILITY & INTELLIGENCE. Conformation, or looks was AFTER work ethic and intelligence.
