DID YOU KNOW? The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is actually descended from the lesser-known English Toy Spaniel! The Toy Spaniel was insanely popular from the 1500s thru the 1700s.
By the 1920s, King Charles spaniels looked much more like today's English Toy Spaniels, with a flatter face and a domed top skull. American fancier Roswell Eldridge wanted to regain the look of the early spaniels in the paintings of King Charles II. He traveled all over England searching for the “old-type” spaniels. The original Spaniel he searched for were bigger dogs with more muzzle. He sweetened the pot with an offer of 25 pounds ($30 USD). Sadly he passed away in 1928, the very year the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel club began.
