The Bichon Frise originated over 1000 years ago, probably in Spain. Due to their happy nature and all-around pleasantness to have around, the early Bichons became the darling of sailors who sailed the world over. These dogs were prized as companions and often used to barter for treasures in far-off lands. From the 1400s until the 1800s they were the darlings of Mediterranean royalty.
In the early 1900s, or so, Bichons were divided into four categories: the Bichon Maltese, the Bichon Bolognaise, the Bichon Havanese and the Bichon Tenerife, which became known as the Bichon Frise.
