Siberian Husky Nose Butter® Help for Your Husky's Nose Issues
Siberian Husky Nose Conditions
Huskies not only have a tendency toward dry noses, there are also other conditions that plague their noses, such as snow nose or nasal solar dermatitis. In many cases our Nose Butter can be used as a nose remedy to help relieve the discomfort associated with those conditions. Nose Butter® contains no active ingredients, is non-toxic and will do no harm if swallowed. Many Husky owners have reported their dogs got relief from the moisturizing properties of Nose Butter.
Husky Nose Specific Conditions
Snow Nose or Winter Nose is a condition many Nordic breeds, such as Huskies and Malamutes, are prone to in which the nose color fades to pink, especially down the middle. It seems to be triggered by shorter daylight hours and is NOT, as you would think, caused by cold weather. When the days get longer, the normal darker pigmentation comes back. It can become permanent with age (that blasted getting old!). No other health issues occur with snow nose, so it hasn't been studied extensively. My gut says it may be associated with Vitamin D, the sunlight vitamin, but please do NOT dose your dog with Vitamin D without veterinarian consultation.
Zinc-Responsive Skin Disease
A zinc absorption issue is considered the cause of zinc-responsive skin disease. Zinc supplementation is usually required for dogs diagnosed with this condition for the rest of their life. Diets that are too high in calcium or other nutrients are believed to precipitate the onset. Please don't attempt to determine your dog's dosage without professional help.
Husky Nasal Solar Dermatitis & Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE)
Nasal solar dermatitis, a hereditary immune disease, also called "collie nose" affects the skin of the face and nose. Rough, scaly skin or ulcers where the nose and skin connect and color loss on the nose are symptoms. The nose sunburns easily and should be protected from the sun. Treatment includes avoiding sunlight or using veterinarian approved sunscreen, cream corticosteroids, medication and supplements. Be careful and do not use any sunscreen with zinc oxide in it.
Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) affects the nose, causing loss of color of the nose and open sores and crusts. Siberian Huskies and crosses may be pre-disposed to DLE. There is no cure for discoid lupus, which is the most common inflammatory disease of dog's nose. The nose can become smooth and shiny. It is slick rather than the normal textured appearance of a dog nose. Pigmentation can fade and the nose leather becomes rusty, irritated, cracked, withered and often ulcerated.
All information on these conditions is offered for information only. Consult your veterinarian for a medical diagnosis.
