Wolf Cousins...Really! Did you know the Samoyed is more closely related to the Wolf than any other breed of dog? It's science! A 33,000-year-old fossil was discovered in the remote Altai mountains (Kazakhstan/China) in 2011. The fossil is from a dog/wolf hybrid that appears to be a bit more dog than wolf.
After running all the DNA tests, scientists put forth the news that this dog which was just a bit more dog than wolf is more closely related to the Samoyed than any other modern dog breed. Gotta love science!
The Samoyed has a magnificent coat, fabulous smile and his black nose makes a striking contrast to all that white. Like many Nordic or spitz-type dogs, the Samoyed is also prone to a variety of nose issues. Their nose dryness can range from an overall dull, dryness to a more extreme version, Nasal Hyperkeratosis, in which errant nose tissue grows over the nose in chunks or layers.
