Born in Huddelsfield, Yorkshire county in 1865, Ben took the dog show and ratting competition by storm, winning over 70 ratting competitions. Ben also became a widely used stud dog, due to his prepotency in producing smaller puppies who were under five pounds as adults. Ben is rightfully considered the foundation of the modern Yorkshire Terrier. By 1874 the breed was officially named the Yorkshire Terrier in honor of Ben. His look and type lives on.
