But First, a few Berner Bits

Bernese Mountain Dog, roughly translated from the the German "Berner Sennenhund," which means "Bernese Alpine Herdsman's Dog." How is that for the epitome of a down to earth, "tell it like it is" name? The name Sennenhund is derived from the German Senne (“alpine pasture”) and Hund (“dog”), as these dogs were always with alpine herders and dairy farmers.

They were called Senn Berner (Bernese in English), which refers to the area of the breed’s origin, the town of Bern in Switzerland. What bucolic lives they all seemed to lead, until WWI and WWII, of course. Here's a Blog post I wrote on how the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog was saved from extinction.

The Four Sennenhund Breeds Are:

  • Greater Swiss Mountain Dog
  • Bernese Mountain Dog
  • Appenzeller
  • Entlebucher Mountain Dog
