The Blissful Dog of the Day | The Bull Terrier

So Much Swagger!

The Bull Terrier has often been called the Cavalier Gladiator. When they enter a room, everyone takes notice. From their one-of-a-king egg-shaped head to their twinkling triangle eyes to that muscular physique, the Bull Terrier grabs your attention. This breed is 100% extrovert! Talk about BIG personalities.

Big Package or Mini?

The Bull Terrier is found in the standard size and a min-version, both of which have more swagger per ounce than imaginable! They are registered as two entirely separate breeds with the AKC.

Standard Bull Terrier males usually weigh 55-65 pounds and females 45-55 pounds and are around 20" at the shoulder.

The Miniature Bull Terrier weigh 25-35 pounds and are 10-14 inches tall at the shoulder.

Your Bull Terrier Has the DNA of a Gladiator

The American Kennel Club describes the Bull Terrier as…Playful and clownish, the Bull Terrier is best described as a three year-old child in a dog suit. Given his muscular build, the Bull Terrier can appear unapproachable, but he is an exceedingly friendly dog, with a sweet and fun-loving disposition. –AKC

Bull Terrier History Bits

The Bull Terrier's original purpose, like so many of the Bulldog and Terrier breeds was to bait bulls.

Their close-to-the-ground build gave them a low center of gravity which enabled them to be really, really hard for bulls or other dogs to knock over. Their low center of gravity, while no longer needed for fighting bulls, gives them that extra swagger in their gait that their fans find so appealing.

RUFUS YOU'RE A STAR!

Rufus, full name Ch. Rocky Top's Sundance Kid was the FIRST colored Bull Terrier to win Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show. I remember that year, as the crowd truly went WILD to see a non-fluffy dog take home the big award.

RANDOM BULL TERRIER FACTS AND TIDBITS

The Bull Terrier is the only registered breed to have triangle shaped eyes.

The Bull Terrier is also the only dog breed to have the unusual egg-shaped =head, giving them a Roman nose look.

TARGET DOG (DID YOU HEAR THE COMMERCIALS IN YOUR MIND?)

Bullseye, the Target dog, has been in commercials since 1999, so yeah, there has been more than one Target dog. BUT, Target isn't telling how many! And of course, Bullseye always flies First Class. I cannot believe Bullseye has to fly commercial. You'd think Target would have a Gulfstream for his usage.

OCD MUCH? Bull Terriers are much more prone to Obsessive Personality Disorders than any other breed, with German Shepherds a close second. Tail chasing, shadow chasing, compulsive pacing are all signs of Canine OCD. Some Bull Terrier have even militated their tails or caused sores from bumping as they spin.
