Product Info | Nose Butter Ingredients

Using the highest quality ingredients is a very big deal to us. We use use every single product we offer on our own animals and ourselves. Really.

The following info applies to mainly to NOSE BUTTER®, but is helpful for PAW BUTTER, ELBOW BUTTER AND BOO BOO BUTTER

HOW NOSE BUTTER®, PAW BUTTER, ELBOW BUTTER & BOO BOO BUTTER WORK

Our butters are rich moisturizers that are quickly absorbed in layers. The layers are the fats and butters used, which is why using any one of the ingredients helps some, but does not last long enough. The layers are what make our products work. That and our special blissful magic secret mojo.

WHO MAKES THE NOSE BUTTER, PAW BUTTER, ELBOW BUTTER & BOO BOO BUTTER?

Each and every one of the butters are handcrafted individually by a member of my team and me, right here in far northern Minnesota.

PRODUCT WAS HARDER THAN EXPECTED

Occasionally someone tells us the product was denser or harder than they thought it would be. They were expecting something fluffier or softer.

The WHY - For our products to work, they have to be dense enough to stay on your dog and get the job done. Plus, nose leather, paw pads and elbow calluses are thicker, tougher tissue than we have on our hands or faces (if you were thinking it would be like a face cream). More beeswax in the recipe adds more staying power. This makes it stiffer/harder.

THE FIX - This one is an easy fix. Just use a spoon to dig a bit out and warm it in the palm of your hand. The products melt at body temperature, so rubbing it in your palm will warm it up and make it easier to apply.

WHAT IF MY DOG LICKS SOME OFF OR EATS THE WHOLE CONTAINER?

There is nothing in our butters that can harm your dog, unless they have a sensitivity to a specific ingredient. If they lick some off, no worries. If they eat an entire container (it happens), no worries. The worst that may happen is a bit of um, puddin' poo. BUT, your dog does not need to eat that much concentrated fat in one sitting, so put the container away after using.

WHY SO MANY DOG BREED LABELS?

NOSE BUTTER for your Chihuahua is the exact same as NOSE BUTTER® for your Mastiff. It's the same recipe, just different labels. The labels celebrate the incredible diversity amongst dog breeds and the people who love them. Of course we have a JUST A NOSE label and Mixed breed dog.

YOU DON'T HAVE MY DOG BREED

No worries! Select any breed you like, our generic JUST A NOSE label or Mixed breed. Contact us and let us know your breed...that's how we add new ones.

HOW TO APPLY NOSE BUTTER® IN TINS
  • Open the tin
  • Scoop a bit out appropriate to the size of your dog’s nose
  • Dab it on their nose. Tah Dah!
  • You do not have to rub it in, it will melt
  • Distract to keep them from licking (see below)
  • Repeat 2-3x a day for 1-3 days or until nose is back in shape
  • Then use as needed for maintenance (usually 1-2x a week)
  • TIP! If needed, scoop product out with finger or spoon and warm in the palm of your hand to further soften for faster absorption
HOW TO APPLY NOSE BUTTER® IN TUBES
  • Point the tube away from their eyes
  • Swipe across the top of the nose. About as much as a light swipe of lip balm
  • Distract to keep them from licking (see below)
  • Repeat 2-3x a day for 1-3 days or until nose is back in shape
  • Then as needed for maintenance (usually 1-2x a week)
HOW DO I KEEP MY DOG FROM LICKING IT OFF?

DISTRACT & DIVERT BEFORE, DURING & AFTER

  • Give a cookie or treat
  • Feed their dinner (with extra yummies)
  • Play your dog's fave game
  • Throw a ball
  • Go for a walk
TIP! Not only does something positive (cookies) take their mind off having something done to them, it also build an association between GOOD STUFF and NOSE BUTTER application.

EXTRA TIPS FOR EXTREMELY CRUSTY OR CRACKED NOSES

Follow the steps above for tin or tube.

  • After 2-3 days of multiple daily application, test the crusty stuff with a bit of tissue and see if it will rub off.
  • If it does not crumble right off (will look like black, greasy dirt), keep applying NOSE BUTTER 2-3x a day until it easily, without picking, comes off. Resist the urge to pick, as tempting as it may be.
  • The crusty stuff is actually skin and hurts your dog if you pick it off, just like us pulling a scab off a skinned knee too soon.
WHY DOGS STRUGGLE OR AVOID APPLICATION

Occasionally customers tell us their dog did not "like" NOSE BUTTER. We certainly hope that isn't the case and in all reality it is usually; dislike of being restrained, dislike of having face handled, or adversity to anything new.

Some dogs may have been controlled tightly as a puppy and that triggers the struggle reflex.

Most flat-faced dogs loathe having their faces messed with as nature is telling them to keep their already restricted breathing open and clear. So they resist.

Toy dogs are very aware of their small size and over-compensate by putting up a fuss over everything. Some are overly timid (like my Gio) or overly aggressive.

And sometimes we just have to do what is best for our dogs. Cut toenails, give shots, put stuff on their dry noses.

Don't feel bad, it takes my husband I BOTH to apply NOSE BUTTER® to my 13 pound English Toy Spaniel. He twists and flips like a Cirque de Soleil performer!

THE NOSE RUBBER...THE DOG WHO WIPES NOSE BUTTER OFF

That rascal! If your dog immediately runs to the carpet (sofa, bathmat, etc.) and wipes his face as soon as his NOSE BUTTER® is applied, we have answers. Usually feeding dinner immediately after application is enough. Your dog may respond to a walk or being held and petted. Try the tips below!

TIPS FOR APPLYING NOSE BUTTER ON UNCOOPERATIVE DOGS
  1. Scoop a dab of peanut butter on a big wooden spoon and let them lick at it while you dab NOSE BUTTER on
  2. Tag team 'em. Get someone to help. Have them be the treat giver while you dab the product on
  3. Rub the product in the palm of your hand to warm it up before dabbing it on and the extra heat from your hand will allow it to melt faster
  4. You don't have to rub it in PERFECTLY, as the product starts to melt as soon as it gets to body temperature
  5. Catch 'em napping. Dab the product on while they sleep - sneaky one

BIG TIP, warm product (see below) so it will be absorbed faster.

WHY IS THE SKIN UNDER THE CRUST ON MY DOG'S NOSE LIGHTER?

Sometimes dogs will lose that crusty crud and the nose is lighter or even pink underneath. That is very normal and does happen. It is just the new skin. When that crusty crud, which may have been on there for months (or years) is removed by the moisturizing of NOSE BUTTER®, the new skin underneath may be tender and pink, it usually fills in on its own over time.

I QUIT USING NOSE  BUTTER & THE CRUSTY STUFF CAME BACK

Yes, it often does. Dome dogs have a dry nose caused by medication or a temporary situation like visiting a dry, arid climate. Remember, Nasal Hyperkeratosis is a condition, which means there is no CURE for Nasal Hyperkeratosis. You can't apply Nose Butter® a few days, have the dryness go away and never have to apply it again. Think of it like moisturizing your own face (or using sunscreen). You can't moisturize (or slather on SPF30) once and never have to again. Just as we have to keep using sunscreen to stay protected, we have to keep using Nose Butter as a maintenance product for those dogs with this condition. Like cutting toenails...it's part of doing the best we can for our dogs.
