Xolo Dog Nose ButterXoloitzcuintli Dog

The Blissful Dog has added a new breed label to the group. Of course, Nose Butter® is the same good stuff inside, the labels are just for fun for you (and me). Here is a bit about this unusual breed.

The Xoloitzcuintli Dog is an unusual looking dog and their people must be asked a bazillion times a day “What kind of dog is THAT?” For Xolo owners, use as you would your previous moisturizer all over the body. Shea Butter has a bit of natural sunscreen, but use your own good judgment if your dog needs additional sun protection. Xoloitzcuintli Nose Butter is a perfect moisturizer as it is quickly absorbed, is packed full of skin nourishing good stuff and it won’t clog pores. If your dog needs extra support, we suggest Boo Boo Butter.

The  Xoloitzcuintli Factoids & Info

The Xolo is one of the world’s oldest and most unusual breeds, with a history of over 3000 years. These ancient dogs were greatly admired for their intelligence and loyalty and many believed they had the ability to cure a variety of ailments. Their warm, hairless bodies were used as hot water bottles to place next to an affected part of the body and it was believed they could draw out illness.

It is believed the ancestors of the Aztec Indians brought these hairless dogs with them when they immigrated into Mexico from Asia (via Alaska and North America). They were pets, but were also occasionally eaten and sacrificed. Life was different back then!

The Aztecs named the breed after their God of lightning and death, Xolotl. “Xolotl” combined with the word for dog, “itzcuintli” to form the name Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced ‘Show-low-eet-squint-lee’). These dogs, and clay figurines of the dogs, were often buried with their masters, as it was believed the loyal dogs could help the soul navigate the underworld.

Modern Xolos

Found in three sizes, toy, mini and standard, the Xolo ranges from 10 to 60 pounds. Not all Xolo’s are hairless, as in most hairless breeds there are coated varieties, often in the same litter as their hairless littermates. They were accepted into the AKC Non-Sporting group in 2011 and enjoy a robust fan base. Visit their parent club in the USA here.
