There’s a new NOSE BUTTER label in town…the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is ever-so tired of living in his more popular cousin, the Bernese Mountain Dog’ss shadow. Actually, the Swissie is way too noble and big-hearted to ever resent the Berner’s popularity. They are gracious that way. Here is a bit of history on them – interesting breed.SHOP GREATER SWISS MOUNTAIN DOG NOSE BUTTER HERE
While the Swissie is a very ancient breed, there is not much in the way of specific info on exactly when and where they developed as a breed. No stone carvings, odes written to them and inscribed on parchment or cool statues. They were too busy working for all that kinda stuff.
It is pretty much assumed that all of the Swiss Mountain Dogs, known as the Sennenhund, a group which includes the Entelbucher, Appenzeller, Bernese Mountain Dog and Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, were bred from the dogs of the Alps. Some think the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog with its shorter coat, is the result of the Bernese Mountain Dog being crossed with the mastiff breeds that came through the Alps with the Roman army.
There are 18th century paintings that show dogs that appear to be a Greater Swiss or Bernese Mountain type dog.
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs were valued as excellent working dogs and were especially good at draft work, such as pulling carts to market. They also drove or herded dairy cattle, watched over the farm and as offered loyalty and companionship to the farmers. It was much more cost effective for these farmers to have a few dogs than horses to pull their carts.
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog did not gain full acceptance into the AKC until 1995, when they entered the Working Group and joined their fluffier cousin, the Bernese Mountain Dog. Those who discover the unique charms of the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog know it is a unique and distinctive breed, one to be treasured and preserved for their many fine qualities.
