Shih Tzu History: As always, there are different ideas as to the origin of the Shih Tzu. This delightful breed is believed to be one of the most ancient breeds of dog. DNA analysis has proven that ten thousand year old bones which were dug up in China and Tibet, were those of Shih Tzu.
The original Shih Tzu were descended from Lhasa Apso and Pekingese. A scant few dogs were able to leave China in the 1920s and every single Shih Tzu in the western world can trace its heritage back to these dogs.
The Shih Tzu was little more than a relatively unknown breed until the Dowager Empress Tzu Hsi took the breed under her wing. With her supervision of the breeding program, the breed soon became all of the rage in China.
